The first European explorer to arrive in Western Australia was Williem de Vlamingh.
In 1697, de Vlamingh and his crew ventured up the Swan River in their small ships.
He originally named the Swan River "Swartte Zwaanenrivier" (in Dutch) after the large number of swans observed there.
